Maximizing Impact with Minimal Spend: Tips for Creating Engaging Video Content on a Budget
In the dynamic world of digital marketing, and if you’ve read my previous blog post, then you’ll have seen that one key point that’s been driven home is how video content has emerged as an indispensable tool for engaging audiences and conveying brand messages. However, there is a misconception around the quality of video content being synonymous with high production costs, which depending on your budget, can be discouraging for some business, especially small to medium-sized enterprises. So let’s discuss how we can have our cake and eat it too.
The truth is, with a bit of creativity and planning, it's entirely possible to produce compelling video content without breaking the bank. If you’re looking to leverage the power of video for your business, here is a list of practical tips to help you create engaging content on a budget.
1. The Man With A Plan
A well-thought-out plan is your first line of defense against unnecessary expenses. Start with a clear objective for your video and a concise message: what is it’s purpose? What are you trying to say? Who is the intended audience? Having all of these answers in the forefront of your mind not only saves you time, but costly mistakes and reshoots.
As both a digital marketer and video creator, it’s important to also ensure you understand your audiences well. What are their buyer behaviours? What platforms does research suggest they spend the most time on? What content resonates best with them? For example, you wouldn’t use a certain lingo that resembled more closely with Gen-Z if your targeted audience is Gen Y. At the same time, you wouldn’t go all in and advertise on TikTok if your primary audience didn’t spend most of their time on there.
2. Embrace DIY Filming Techniques
You don't need high-end equipment to make a great video. This statement is something I’ve been consistently passionate about since I first picked up a camera. In fact, in my early content days, I made a point of first learning to shoot great content on my iPhone before taking it a step further and offering this as a service to businesses at a fair cost, which they happily accepted. Only after making enough money this way did I eventually use the profits to purchase my first entry-level digital camera. All of this to say, you don’t need expensive equipment to get started. You just need to start.
The best part of doing this in this day and age, is that current smartphones are equipped with cameras that can shoot in 4K quality with adjustable frame rates and built-in stabilisers, so get your phone and start capturing! Here are some tips to help take you an extra step further:
Invest in a tripod or phone stabiliser to further steady your shot
Experiment with natural lighting to enhance the visual appeal of your videos
Embrace the basics. Something as simple as you speaking to the camera can resonate with your audiences. Bring people further into your organisation or business. Don’t be afraid to let them get to know and establish a connection with you
Download free apps and software tools to edit your videos
Et, voila!
3. Keep It Short and Sweet
Depending on the goal of your videos, match the duration of your videos accordingly. For those just starting out or trying to keep to budget, short form videos are a great way to start as they not only align with the decreasing attention spans of online audiences, they also require fewer resources to produce.
Focus on delivering your message succinctly and engagingly, ensuring that every second of your video adds value to the viewer.
5. Utilise User-Generated Content
Short on time? Encourage your customers or followers to create content for you. User-generated content (UGC) is not only cost-effective but also builds community and authenticity around your brand. Whether it's testimonials, reviews, or creative contributions, UGC can help provide a fresh perspective and genuine endorsement for your brand.
A great place to start encouraging UGC from your audiences is firstly weaving this into your marketing messages; partner with local content creators; utilise your team members, existing advocates and personal connections to get the ball rolling; host a giveaway or competition.
6. Focus on Storytelling
At the heart of every great video is a compelling story. While a professional creator can help elevate your content to the next level, there’s plenty of ways a business can first leverage the tools around them to create great content. If you read my previous blog post, then you’ll also understand the power of compelling storytelling in helping you achieve your video content goals.
Instead of expensive visual effects or exotic locations, focus on storytelling that resonates with your audience. Authentic, relatable stories can evoke emotions and connect with viewers far more effectively than flashy production elements.
7. Optimise for Silent Viewing
Many videos on social media are watched without sound. Make sure your message comes across even when viewed silently by using captions, engaging visuals, and clear storytelling.
Creating engaging video content on a budget is not only feasible but can also encourage a level of creativity and innovation that lavish budgets do not necessitate. By focusing on your message, leveraging available resources, and embracing the authentic storytelling that connects with audiences, you can produce video content that not only resonates with your viewers but also supports your marketing objectives without stretching your finances.
Remember, the value of video content lies not in how much you spend, but in the creativity and authenticity you bring to the table. Start small, experiment, and watch as your budget-friendly videos make a significant impact.
This also holds true for creators who are looking to start out but lack the financial resources to go big and spend. Don’t underestimate the power in starting small and working to your strengths. There are plenty of ways you can leverage the tools around you to get ahead. All it requires is a little creativity and perseverance.
Until next time,
