How Cinematic Storytelling Elevates Your Brand
A case study featuring a film project in collaboration with Kia Orana Collective for World Ocean Day
The ocean stands as a testament to nature's majesty and mystery. It's a world teeming with life and is incredibly vital to our own way of life, yet every day it faces constant threats that endanger its very existence. World Ocean Day is a call to the guardians of the deep blue to come together in defense of our oceans.
It was in this spirit that we were shoulder tapped by the awesome team at Kia Orana Collective (KOCo) to help develop a film for ocean advocacy. Together, we embarked on a journey to produce a film which encapsulated our struggles through a unique storytelling approach.
Project Background and the KOCo Team
This project was commissioned by the National Environment Service (NES). At its most basic concept, the goal was simple: craft a promotional film for World Ocean Day. KOCo's top notch overall management and initial vision laid the groundwork, while my role was to breathe life into this concept through the art of production and post-production. Together, we set the stage for a seamless production.
I’ve had the pleasure of working with KOCo on a number of projects. What I’ve found is that the team bring a delightful balance of professionalism and fun to every single one and bring another level to project management that is often missing in our local private sector.
Warning: you’ll hear me sing praise several times in this feature, and in future pieces to come, because I truly believe in crediting where it’s due and that these guys well and truly deserve it.
Diving into Production and Utilising Local Talent
Stepping into the realms of production and post-production, I utilised not only the tools of my trade, but the highly talented Marino Evans-Vakatini to undertake the role as primary camera operator while I wore the directors cap. This ensured we left no stone unturned and could effortlessly bring the concept to life.
Videography is more than capturing moments; it's about telling a story that resonates, and this project demanded nothing less. KOCo, with their adept project management skills, navigated the logistical currents, ensuring a smooth sail from inception to the final showcase.
Warning 2.0: you’ll also hear me sing praise around Marino as we collaborated on another project I’ll soon be covering. Marino studied in Auckland and upon graduation, has built a significant portfolio which includes varied ranges of production levels. He’s currently based overseas.
A Story of Resilience and Unity
At the heart of our film lies the story of a young girl, an aspiring ocean paddler whose journey on tumultuous waters mirrors the challenges we face in combating climate change. Her struggles and eventual triumph, aided by the assistance of fellow paddlers, serves as a metaphor for the collective action required to make a difference. This narrative, though simple, captures the essence of unity and the impact of joining hands for a cause greater than ourselves.
The Ripple Effect
The unveiling of our film was more than a moment of creativity; it was a message, a beacon of hope and a call to action. The film's reception succeeded our expectations, cutting through the noise of television and social media feeds to ignite conversations around the importance of our oceans and the urgent need for conservation.
Crafting Visions into Reality
This project stands as a testament to the services I offer, the exceptional project management of KOCo, and the immense local talent we have through the likes of Marino. From cinematic films to promotional narratives and company stories, this case study exemplifies the potential to create impactful content that not only tells a story but also drives change.
